BECOME A DESTINATION IMAGINATION® APPRAISER

Being a Wisconsin DI Appraiser may be for you if you:

  • like to wear funny hats or even costumes
  • don't mind crawling on the floor to get a better look at a team's solution
  • have a great sense of humor
  • enjoy being blown away by our youth's innovation and creativity
  • are comfortable working as part of a team

We welcome you to learn more about becoming a DI Appraiser at our Sectional or Affiliate tournaments!  This is perfect for a former Team Manager (TM) or a TM who does not have a team this season, alumni, a parent of a former DI-er....

Mobile scoring is used at all WIDI tournaments.  Appraisers will need an electronic device that will connect to the Internet (phone, tablet, laptop).

DI experience is nice but not required. Training will be provided!

A few things to note:

There are TWO places you will need to log in. Please use the same email across all platforms.

  1. ALL Appraisers must have an account with DIHQ.  If you do not already have an account, please create yours here.  This does NOT register you as an Appraiser for any tournaments.  You must do that in step 2.
  2. After you create or if you already have a DI account, follow the link to Register Your Team (RYT) to register for any tournaments at which you wish to appraise. You must do step 2 for each, individual tournament during each season. For example, if you wish to appraise at the Northeast Sectional AND the Southeast Sectional, you must register for each tournament separately in RYT.

You will answer a series of questions that will indicate your preferred Challenge, level of comfort with certain aspects, interests, and experience with certain scoring areas.

When the time comes, you will be contacted by the Regional Challenge Master (RCM), Affiliate Challenge Master (ACM), Regional Director (RD) or Tournament Director regarding your assignment and training.

Appraiser Training

WIDI Challenge Master & Appraiser Training
All WIDI Appraisers are required to complete the training modules for your particular assignment.  These training modules are presented through DIHQ's new learning management system.

Once you and your job assignments are entered into the system by DIHQ, you will receive an email from DIHQ with instructions on how to log in. This email will be unique to you and your training needs.

Training is also provided at a tournament by the Challenge Masters.

Diversity,Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Training
All WIDI Appraisers will need to watch the DEI training video prior to appraising at any WIDI tournament.

Please use your FULL name so completion can be tracked.

BASIC DI APPRAISER REQUIREMENTS

The main job of an Appraiser is to PRAISE a team and award points for what they presented. There are many  different Appraiser roles from checking in paperwork to awarding points for meeting certain Challenge criteria.  Former Team Managers including those whose schools/programs are not participating in the program this season, and alumni are encouraged to sign up!

An Appraiser:

  • must be 18 years of age or older and no longer in high school.
  • may not appraise a team for which they have served as Team Manager
  • may not appraise a team that includes their own family member(s)
  • will be trained prior to any tournament
  • must have knowledge of the Challenge to which he or she will be assigned
  • will register with DIHQ and the appropriate Region and Affiliate

TYPES OF APPRAISERS

There are many types of Appraisers so have a look and see where you would like to see yourself!

  • Pre-Prep Appraiser: This person reviews teams' Tournament Data Forms that are submitted online in the DI Resource Area before tournament day. This is a non-scoring role.
  • Prep Area Appraiser: This person gets to greet teams before they go into the Challenge room to present their solutions. The prep person goes over the team's paperwork and makes sure the team is ready! This is a non-scoring role.
  • Structure/Device Check-In Appraiser: The Engineering Challenge often requires a structure or device to be built that has to meet certain requirements.  The Engineering Check-In Appraisers meet with a team representative to be sure the structure or device meets the Challenge requirements. This is a non-scoring role.
  • Time Keeper/Announcer (TK/A): The energetic TK/A meets the team in the launch area of the Challenge room after the team is done in the prep area. When the appraisal team is ready, the TK/A will introduce the team and the Challenge from a script and ask everyone if they are ready.  He/she thens starts and stops the clock according to the time allotted for the Challenge. This is a non-scoring role.
  • Central Challenge Appraiser: A Central Challenge Appraiser learns the Challenge prior to the tournament and scores only the elements assigned to them by the Challenge Master. Some may be objective scores (yes it happened or no it did not) and some may be subjective scores. A Challenge Appraiser also gets to chat with the teams after their presentation to ask questions and get a better idea of what they just saw. This is a scoring role.
  • Instant Challenge (IC) Appraiser: IC Appraisers learn the Instant Challenge the day of the tournament. The IC is a 4 - 5 minute Challenge that teams solve on the spot. This is a scoring role.
  • Score Room: The score room team monitors all the scores from every Challenge room via the mobile scoring program.  When all the scores are in, the score room creates a score summary report indicating placement at the tournament.

THE REST OF AN APPRAISAL TEAM

There are several others who will work with or on an Appraisal team.

Challenge Masters

  • Wisconsin has two - three Affiliate Challenge Masters (ACM) for each Challenge. An Affiliate Challenge Master trains the Regional Challenge Masters (RCM) and secures and organizes the Appraisal teams for the Affiliate tournament.
  • Regional Challenge Masters are responsible for securing and training the appraisal teams for their respective Sectional tournaments.  Oftentimes the RCM will be the person who hands back the team scores.
  • Head Appraiser: Sometimes an Appraisal team will have a Head Appraiser who assists the ACM or RCM with their duties, including handing back team scores.
