The Destination Imagination Creative Process: A Framework for Innovation in DI and Beyond

At the heart of the Destination Imagination (DI) experience lies a powerful tool that transforms creative chaos into innovative solutions: the Creative Process. While DI’s Challenges might look like a blend of art, engineering, storytelling, and teamwork (and they are!), every solution is built using a repeatable, real-world strategy that empowers students to think critically and solve problems creatively.

So what exactly is the DI Creative Process—and how does it apply both during the Challenge Experience and in everyday life? Let’s break it down.

🌟 What Is the DI Creative Process?

The DI Creative Process is a five-step framework that students use to develop solutions to their team Challenges. It’s not just about coming up with ideas—it’s about evaluating, building, refining, and presenting those ideas in a way that works.

Here are the five steps:

  1. Recognize – Understand the problem or opportunity.

  2. Imagine – Brainstorm and explore ideas.

  3. Initiate & Collaborate – Plan and take action as a team.

  4. Assess – Review progress and make improvements.

  5. Evaluate & Celebrate – Reflect on the outcome and celebrate the journey.

🎭 In the Challenge Experience

Each DI Challenge—whether Technical, Scientific, Fine Arts, Improvisational, Engineering, Service Learning, or Early Learning—gives students a complex task with specific rules and goals. Teams use the Creative Process to bring their ideas to life.

Here’s how:

  • Recognize: Teams begin by reading and analyzing the Challenge. What’s being asked? What are the constraints? What’s the end goal?

  • Imagine: Next comes the brainstorming phase. No idea is too big or too wild! Teams come up with multiple ways to meet the Challenge requirements.

  • Initiate & Collaborate: This is where ideas turn into action. Teams divide responsibilities, experiment with materials, write scripts, test builds, and work together to create a full solution.

  • Assess: As the tournament approaches, teams reflect on their work. Does the solution meet the Challenge requirements? Could it be improved? Are all voices being heard?

  • Evaluate & Celebrate: After presenting their solution, teams take time to reflect—what went well, what could improve, and how much they’ve grown. And, of course, they celebrate all that they accomplished!

🌎 In Real Life

What makes the DI Creative Process truly special is how easily it transfers into everyday life. Whether students go on to careers in design, teaching, business, or engineering—or simply face everyday challenges—they’ll use this framework again and again.

  • Recognize when there’s a challenge at work or home.

  • Imagine new ways to solve problems.

  • Initiate & Collaborate with coworkers, classmates, or family to make a plan.

  • Assess and tweak the plan as needed.

  • Evaluate & Celebrate progress, milestones, and lessons learned.

This process helps build a growth mindset, which is critical in today’s fast-changing world. It teaches that mistakes are part of learning, and that creativity isn’t just a spark—it’s a skill you can grow.

💡 Final Thoughts

The DI Creative Process isn’t just for tournament season. It’s a tool for life. Students who learn to approach problems this way gain confidence, resilience, and real-world skills that prepare them for success in school, in their careers, and in their communities.

At DI, we don’t just create solutions—we create problem solvers.
And it all starts with a process that turns imagination into innovation.
