What happens at a DI Tournament?

Let's celebrate!  DI tournaments are where teams show off all their hard work and present the solution to their chosen Team Challenge for trained Appraisers who will award points (except Early Learning) and give feedback on the hard work they have done.  Teams earn points for meeting the Challenge criteria, creativity, teamwork, innovation, and more.

Spectators are welcome and encouraged to come and witness these Team Challenge presentations - as many as they can!

Teams will also solve an Instant Challenge, which is a quick-think-on-your-feet Challenge that is a secret until Tournament Day! No spectators are allowed in the Instant Challenge room. Trained Appraisers will award points based on the criteria of the Challenge.  The scores for the Team Challenge and the Instant Challenge are then combined and scaled to determine a team's total score for that tournament.

Many tournaments have other fun things for teams and spectators to do such as games, pin trading, and a merchandise stand.

Each tournament then holds a Celebration Ceremony where team placements and special awards are announced. The placements will determine which teams are eligible to move on to the next level of competition.

Teams compete against teams in their own Challenge and level.  For example, all Middle-Level Fine Arts teams compete against all other Middle-Level Fine Arts at that tournament.

In Wisconsin, all teams compete at the Sectional (Regional) level.  The top three teams in each competitive Challenge and level qualify to advance to the Wisconsin Affiliate tournament (state). The top two teams in each Challenge and level at the Affiliate tournament qualify to advance to Global Finals.

Registering For a DI Tournament

Teams must register for each tournament they plan to attend.  Regional Directors will communicate tournament dates, registration deadlines and fees, and any other pertinent information teams will need to participate in a tournament.
